PROGRAM 14:
Dec 24, 2006 - Warm Thoughts and Memories for the Holidays
Today’s program includes stories not only about the holidays, but also about remembering families and family members who have been especially important to us in our lives. It’s those fond memories that we often talk about when we get together for the holidays…those people who helped shape and enrich our lives. And so this program is dedicated to them as well as the holidays.
Featured storytellers:
Yvonne Healy (Michigan)
The Healy Cross
We all have families that give us both pleasure and pain. Yvonne looks far back into her family history in Ireland to tell us about her very unusual family background and how their early experiences carried her family forward into a new life in a new country. With a lilt and a smile, Yvonne brings us this reminiscence of a family worth remembering!
Glenda Bonin (Arizona)
Buddy and the Bear
Glenda looks back at the pleasures she experienced with her loving grandfather and his dog—and the lessons about life that she learned from their adventures together. With a twinkle in her eye, Glenda tells us this tale of an unexpected encounter in the woods that helped shape her future life.
John Lopez (California, Stagebridge Theatre, Oakland)
The Bomber Pilot Helps His Mother
John lovingly remembers his childhood during World War II when his hard-working mother toiled at a man’s job and needed the help of her young son just to get through each day. Told bilingually in Spanish and English, this story will warm your heart and give you a glimpse into the everyday lives of those families who helped at home while our soldiers fought overseas to protect our lives and our democracy.
Sue Black (Illinois)
Dancing With My Dad
Sue reminisces about her dad, who didn't talk much to her when she was a kid, but one night showed her everything she needed to know about life and love when he taught her how to dance the polka. She saw her father in a new way that night and her life was changed forever.
Jackie Baldwin (California)
The Battle Between the Shoe and the Stocking
Jackie brings us this humorous story of a battle between a Shoe and a Stocking, but it’s really about the battles we’ve all faced in our lives when we’ve met overbearing bullies and had to deal with them. There is a delicious comeuppance at the end of this tale that will delight you!

Guest tellers...
• Yvonne Healy (Michigan)
Using simply voice, gesture and story, Yvonne invites you into the theater of your own imagination. Raised in the Irish oral tradition she grew up to act on New York’s stage and screen. Multicultural mythology, a love of language, and her outrageous family lured her back to storytelling.
Born in England to Irish parents, Yvonne immigrated with her family to the Appalachian Mountains in Pennsylvania. Inherited wanderlust inspired Yvonne to leave that small town for Swarthmore College, Tufts University and eventual life as a professional actress in the Big Apple. The birth of her daughters re-opened her heart to storytelling where she thrives on the deep sense of connection between audience and storyteller.
32 years of storytelling, professional acting, and comic improvising infuse Yvonne's lively teaching style with theatre games and interactive approaches. Children, teens and adults develop communication skills while enhancing literacy development in “Write Out Loud, "Kindred Keepsakes”, “ActUP!” and other dynamic residencies and workshops.
Yvonne gives thanks for her good fortune by volunteering as Managing Editor for MI Story: Michigan's Storytelling Publication, webmaster www.MichiganStorytelling.com and Ann Arbor Storytellers Guild, Northlands Storytelling Network Board of Directors, producing Detroit Story League Storytelling Festival, State Liaison for National Storytelling Network and participating & mentoring actively in the Detroit Story League, National Storytelling Network, and Ann Arbor Storytellers Guild. This Swarthmore College graduate and Kripalu Yoga teacher volunteers frequently at her children’s schools and church, regularly scrubs pots in homeless shelters and enjoys wedded bliss with the same wonderful man since 1984.

• Glenda Bonin (Arizona)
As a storyteller, story teacher, performer and workshop presenter for more than twenty-five years, I love what I do! My experience includes work with grades K through 12, college classes, library programs and community events. My storytelling includes puppetry, magic, theatre arts and creative writing activities. All programs are tailored to meet the needs and interests of each group. Fees vary and are determined on a per job basis, taking venue, anticipated audience size, program length and number of performances into consideration.
From 2006 through 2008, I will be expanding my touring schedule to include more western states, the Midwest and a few eastern areas of the country. This means that schools and libraries can enjoy a significant savings because travel expenses are never added to my program fees when I am on tour. You might want to check my schedule to see if the tour route will take me to or through your neck of the woods.
I am listed as a performer on the following rosters: Alaska Council on the Arts; Arizona Commission on the Arts; Nevada Council on the Arts; North Dakota Council on the Arts; San Diego City Elementary Schools Preferred Performer List; Tucson-Pima Arts Council/Southern Arizona Artist Directory; Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) Arts Register.
This year, Glenda was honored to be selected as one of the "Western Showcase" Storytellers for the 17th annual TIMPANOGOS STORYTELLING FESTIVAL, August 31 - September 2.

• John Lopez (California; Stagebridge Theatre, Oakland)
John is a long-time member of Stagebridge Theatre.
Here's a quote from him:
"I was born in Redwood City, CA in 1934, and raised within the Hispanic culture and community. Storytelling is something I've been hearing all my life, from uncles, aunts, and my mother. That's how this story was born."
Info about Stagebridge:
STAGEBRIDGE is the nation's oldest Senior Theatre Company. Based in Oakland, California,
STAGEBRIDGE is an arts organization that uses theatre and storytelling to bridge the generation gap and to stimulate positive attitudes toward aging. STAGEBRIDGE’s intergenerational programs feature senior theater productions, storytelling in the schools, acting classes for seniors, and writing contests for children.
Through these programs, we demonstrate our vision of cooperation, creativity, and joy among people of all ages and backgrounds.
Information about Stagebridge Theatre:
Oakland, CA
Since 1978, Stagebridge Theatre Company has been using the arts to bridge the generations. What began as a drama class at a senior center, grew into a production company where original plays were created and presented to senior groups and school children. Positive images of older adults are portrayed through theatre classes, workshops, school programs and public performances.
Stagebridge continues to create original plays about aging, classes for older adults and produces a popular storytelling program in local elementary schools. Today, the company is comprised of more than 100 adults whose average age is 70. Their programs reach more than 30,000 people a year throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Since 1978, Stagebridge's mission has been to include older people in theater and to use performance as a means of bridging generations. Storybridge, its intergenerational arts and literacy project, enables low-income older adults and at-risk children to interact and learn through storytelling programs like "Grandparents' Tales" and "Senior Storytellers in the Schools." Stagebridge also coordinates classes in acting, improv, storytelling, and scene study, as well as performances of original plays about aging for individuals in schools, rest homes, hospitals, libraries, senior centers, and theaters. Its quarterly newsletter currently reaches 3,000 subscribers.

• Jackie Baldwin (California)
Jackie has been a storyteller all her life but she got serious about it in the mid-'80s when she began and later graduated from the Dominican University Professional Storytelling Credential Program in San Rafael, created by the wonderful Ruth Stotter.
In the late '90s, Jackie launched the Story-Lovers website and with the generous assistance of tellers all over the world has helped the site grow to be one of the largest on the Internet providing story ideas and sources. Story-Lovers will soon become a podcast, available to anyone in the world 24/7. She also began teaching storytelling and creative writing in the late '90s and is working currently with both adults and children to bring the joy of storytelling into their lives, personally and professionally.
Jackie wrote/directed/produced award-winning educational television programs and series for PBS for 25 years, based out of San Francisco. She recently began concentrating on radio with a weekly, one-hour program Story-Lovers World! on KSVY Sonoma 91.3 FM, in which she welcomes storytellers from around the world to share their ideas and stories through live streaming, which makes the program available to anyone with a computer, no matter where in the world they live. Plans are underway to syndicate this program on international radio.
In 2000, Jackie began publishing the thematic Bare Bones books, which reduce stories to their "bare bones" and include stories from the last 100 years. Nine books comprise this series so far, with more to come, and many of the the stories are contributed by international tellers. A published author, her latest book, An Enchanted Garden of Seeds and Stories, includes eight world folktales involving plants and eight packets of seeds to go with the stories. It is available on amazon.com or http://www.story-lovers.com . Story-Lovers is also a source for all storytelling stationery products, such as calendars, greeting cards, business cards, notepads, matted prints, and thousands of early 20th-century artwork by the world's best-known artists.
A board member of the Storytelling Association of Alta, California (S.A.A.C.) and the Bay Area Independent Publishers Assn. (BAIPA), Jackie was awarded the National Storytelling Network's prestigious 2006 ORACLE Award for Distinguished National Service.
She produces San Francisco Bay Area regional events called Teller-to-Teller, which are designed to provide behind-the-scenes, professional information, advice and sharing about the field to all storytellers, from beginning to advanced.
