•• Oregon ... Fishtrap Storytime, Stories for ages 4-104
• 1/2 hr show once a week, Weds nite, Nov-March KWVR 92.1FM
• Fishtrap is a nonprofit devoted to good writing and clear thinking in the West. ( http://www.fishtrap.org )
• The radio show started about 7 yrs ago. This is my 4th year as producer.
The Bedtime Stories program began with volunteer readers of picture books, with those readings interspersed with music. Shows were organized by theme. After I took the show over, we decided not to use copyrighted material without permission, and we changed the name of the program because kids don’t like the word “bedtime”. A survey taught us that as many kids as adults are listening.

•• Children's radio programming — Rabbit Ears Radio: Microleague Multimedia was the new owner of Rabbit Ears Radio, the storytelling program for kids. In 1996, the program went through hard times with its previous owner, which fired its entire staff.

Rabbit Ears Radio acquired by CD-ROM company
Originally published in Current, Feb. 17, 1997
By Jacqueline Conciatore
A maker of computer games and other software, Microleague Multimedia Inc., is buying Rabbit Ears Productions Inc., maker of the family program Rabbit Ears Radio.

The PRI-distributed series has been airing only in repeats since April 1996, when owner Millenium Media fired the Rabbit Ears staff of 15 to "streamline" operations. According to a former employee, Rabbit Ears had needed a cash infusion when Millenium bought it from creator Mark Sottnick in late 1995. Millenium's board of directors "pulled the plug" just as Rabbit Ears was making financial headway, the employee said. Millenium's founder and Chief Executive Officer Richard Rasanky resigned at the same time the staff was fired.

The Delaware-based Microleague will pay $2 million to acquire Rabbit Ears, with its 65 titles in audio, video, print and CD-ROM. Microleague says it will produce new radio episodes as well as CD-ROMs, TV shows and books. It has hired as creative consultants Sottnick and his wife--Rabbit Ears co-creator Doris Wilhousky. The radio series is an "important component" of Rabbit Ears' past and future, says Microleague Chief Executive Officer Neil Swartz. Continuing the series will be "good for the Rabbit Ears line," he says.

Sottnick says most of the former Rabbit Ears staff has found new work, but he hopes to contract with those who are freelancing.

Rabbit Ears, hosted by Mel Gibson and Meg Ryan, features stories read by celebrities and music performed by the likes of Bobby McFerrin and B.B. King. About 285 stations carry the weekly show, meant for children but popular with adults as well.

••  Kentucky… What do we mean by Morehead State Public Radio? It's simply an acknowledgement that what started in Morehead in 1965 as a small, 10 watts station at MSU, is now a network with three components.

WMKY (90.3 FM) is licensed for 50,000 watts and serves more than 20 counties in Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. The WMKY studios are in Breckinridge Hall on the campus of Morehead State University.

WOCS (88.3 FM) is licensed for 1,000 watts and serves all or parts of about a dozen counties in Southeast and South Central Kentucky. The station went on the air at full power in November 2001 and is based at Owsley County High School in Booneville. WOCS offers original programming between 9:30 a.m. and 12 Noon and between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays during the school year. There are also special sports and other broadcasts. This innovative partnership with the Owsley County Schools is unique to Kentucky.

Our translator in Inez, (W202BH, 88.3 FM) is licensed for 32 watts to serve Martin County. The translator gives our flagship station a power boost in an area where WMKY's signal is weak and extends public radio service to a part of the Commonwealth that sorely needs it.

We hope to expand the network in the future to include even more stations and/or translators and bring our special brand of public radio to a larger portion of the Appalachian Region. The network is proud of our mountain heritage and looks forward to showcasing the best arts, culture and information this area has to offer.

So, when you hear us refer to Morehead State Public Radio, we are talking about the entire operation, which covers much of central and eastern Kentucky, southern Ohio and western West Virginia. We are also talking about a new age of possibility where we hope to introduce our network to additional listeners throughout the Tri-State.

Hosted by a community volunteer, A Time for Tales is a weekly program of storytelling through words and music which features regional and national storytellers. MSPR also assists in the promotion of the annual Cave Run Storytelling Festival, held each year at Cave Run Lake. A Time for Tales recently celebrated its fifth anniversary on MSPR and can be heard Sunday afternoons at 4p.m.

NEBRASKA———————— Radio A weekly half-hour radio show called One More Story plays in Omaha on the local NPR station, KIOS-FM, and across the state of Nebraska. One More Story is seeking more cds and tapes of adult stories to use on the show. If you'd be willing to send us yours, we'll give it a happy listening and will try to use the stories which suit our programming. We'd like to expand the territory some - making the show accessible to tellers who are not heard as often as others. Right now the show only plays to an audience of from 5 - 10 thousand a week, but we do advertise how to get your tapes & cds during the show. And we are looking for an underwriter to get the show on satellite so it can be picked up by other stations. You must sign a release form. It is important to everyone that you have permission to broadcast the stories that you send us, so if there are some on your tape or cd for which you do not have broadcast permission, please let us know which. If you have questions or concerns, send them to Nancy Duncan, at email address: storygalore@home.com. Tapes & CDs should be mailed to One More Story, 1803 S. 58th St., Omaha, NE 68106. Scottish radio On 4th June 2006 Scottish Storytelling Radio went on the Net. There are two linked stations. STORYTELLING IN SCOTLAND, currently with over 4 hours of storytelling from 10 Scots tellers, best listened to on broadband. This will be added to, but not themed or with sequences that change often. SCOTTISH STORYTELLING, non broadband, accessible through most modems. On Scottish Storytelling at present the 2 hours plus of stories are drawn from the tales on Storytelling in Scotland. But we will include other storytellers and projects soon, we'll change sequences and create themed 'shows.' First ideas include tales from Alec Williamson of Ross-shire in Scots and in Gaelic, and from the School of Scottish Studies archives double CD. 1950s recordings of Davie Stewart telling burker tales, and of Jeannie Robertson telling Alan Lomax's fortune. A 2004 collaboration between three of Scotland's composers and a storyteller. Scots kids telling stories. Give the stations a try, tell us how you get on and what you think of it. On my 5 year old steamdriven computer even the 'non broadband' version wheezes and cuts out. On the newer laptop both versions work fine. The stations are on Live 365 with thousands of other net stations. It is dead cheap - hence the intrusive adverts. To get there, either try the following links

•• Wisdom of the Elders Radio launched its third series of American Indian radio programs in May 2006 on American Indian Radio on Satellite. AIROS aired this series of eight programs 4 times weekly through June. Check out
http://www.airos.org
for more details.
•••••

Wisdom of the Elders Radio: Series Three consists of eight one-hour American Indian cultural magazine radio programs, with the theme: Native Nations along the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Trail . Programs feature tribal elders, historians, storytellers, artists, song carriers and environmentalists from thirteen native nations living in the Bitterroot Mountains and along the Columbia River: Lemhi Shoshone; Nez Perce or Nimi'ipuu; Salish, Kootenai, Flathead; Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla; Yakama; Wasco, Warm Springs, Northern Paiute; Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde; and Chinook tribes. The radio series is hosted by Arlie Neskahi (Dine, or Navajo).

Programs have eight cultural arts segments: Historical Intro, Elder Wisdom, Speaking Native, Sacred Landscape, Tribal Rhythms, Health and Healing, Artists Circle, and Turtle Island Storytellers . The series was produced in Portland, Oregon and will be distributed nationwide via American Indian Radio on Satellite, public, community and college radio stations, and on the website at www.wisdomoftheelders.org . International distribution of our series to Canada and Australia began in 2005 and will continue during 2006.

Wisdom of the Elders Radio series has been funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail at National Park Service, Benton Foundation's Sound Partners for Community Health, National Endowment for the Arts, and Oregon Arts Commission with significant in kind contributions from the radio team.

Health and Healing Radio Series:

Wisdom of the Elders Radio formed a partnership during 2005 with KCUW low power community radio at the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation at Pendleton, Oregon and with Sound Partners for Community Health at Benton Foundation, a project of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Wisdom of the Elders Radio Executive Producer Rose High Bear worked with Debra Croswell, the Umatilla Reservation's Communications Director to develop the Health and Healing radio series. Since one in seven Native Americans has type two diabetes, the series was produced to inform native communities about the growing epidemic, and inspire them to develop habits that will prevent the disease.

Tribal members and diabetes clinic personnel from the 8 reservations were interviewed for the series from the nations that were honored in Series Three. The result is a series of eight five-minute radio segments featuring inspiring stories of how these health role models have learned to follow their diet and exercise regimen and successfully manage their diabetes. They are presented as role models to others to prevent them from acquiring this deadly disease which is occurring today in epidemic proportions in Indian country today.

Those interested in hearing the series of Health and Healing segments can listen to the program on the AIROS network at
http://www.airos.org
or go to the Wisdom of the Elders Radio website at

•• Argentine psychiatric patients broadcast news, views on 'Crazy Radio'
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – In Argentina, the mentally ill are using radio as therapy.
“Radio La Colifata FM 100.1! The first radio station to transmit from a psychiatric hospital!” an announcer shouts into a microphone at Buenos Aires' Jose Borda Neuropsychiatric Hospital. He pushes up the volume as the Beatles belt out “She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah.”

Radio La Colifata – whose name derives from Argentine slang for “colifa” or “crazy one” – began 15 years ago to help patients communicate with their peers, to carry their voices beyond the hospital walls and to break down public misconceptions and prejudices about the mentally ill.

Launched with taped segments sent to a local station, the four-hour program now goes live every Saturday. It can be heard across the Argentine capital, an area home to 10 million people. Via the Internet, it also heard on more than 30 radio stations in Argentina and elsewhere in Latin America. And stations worldwide can download segments from the station's Web site.

•• PBS and NPR Team Up to Produce a New Television Initiative
Philadelphia, PA - The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR) will collaborate to develop and produce a new television initiative with a working title of PUBLIC SQUARE. The announcement was made today by Pat Mitchell, president and CEO of PBS, and Kevin Klose, president and CEO of NPR, at the PBS Annual Meeting.

PUBLIC SQUARE is envisioned as a fresh, bold, 90-minute weekly television program rooted in conversation. While it will cover the week's major events, PUBLIC SQUARE will not confine itself to politics and economics. Rather, it will focus on a wide range of subjects including history, religion, science and popular culture, as well as the arts and performance. PUBLIC SQUARE will also be wide-ranging in the tools it uses to explore American life, from classic documentary storytelling to discussion, debate, interviews and monologues. And, in the tradition of great American general interest magazines, it will use fiction, as well as non-fiction stories, poetry and prose, to examine the American scene.

•• News Release
November 14, 2006
'Storytelling' African Radio Director to Visit U of G
The program director of the African Radio Drama Association (ARDA), which uses soap-opera-like drama as an educational tool in rural areas, will visit the University of Guelph Nov. 17.

Alison Data Phido will meet with faculty, students and staff and discuss her experiences using radio drama to convey important messages at 3:30 p.m. in the Landscape Architecture Building. The visit is free and open to the public.

Phido says that dramatic stories full of colourful characters — from annoying and aggravating folks to friendly and neighbourly ones to greedy cheaters — are used as a tool in Africa. They educate people and provide them with information about everything from women’s rights to agricultural practices. In Africa, radio is the widest-reaching medium on the continent. It’s a particularly valuable tool to reach low-literate and rural populations, she said.

Phido, who has more than 25 years of experience in radio drama and has been with ARDA for the last 10 years, will discuss the success of ARDA’s programs and its relationship with Canada’s Developing Countries Farm Radio Network (DCFRN) during her U of G visit.

•• The Association of Independents in Radio
Weekend America

series: Weekend America (formerly Public Radio Weekend) is designed to fit the sensibility and lifestyle of midday and afternoon listeners on Saturday. It is a weekend companion that is friendly and relaxed -- but also smart, informative, substantive, relevant, alive, fun and sometimes offbeat and quirky. Built around its hosts (Barbara Bogaev and Bill Radke), who are conversational and engaging, Weekend America will use the weekend as an ideal time to reflect our complex, diverse, multilingual, multicultural nation back to itself. Virtually all subject areas are fair game -- current events, public affairs, human interest, arts and entertainment, culture, pop culture, music, live events, recommendations and tips, consumer and environmental issues, science, medicine, technology, literature, sports, fitness, outdoor adventures, travel, food and libations, and more. Weekend America is not a news show, but it will have news. It is not an arts magazine, but it will have arts. It is not about any one thing. We are interested in "one-off" stories, mini-series, and regularly recurring segments on a theme or subject (e.g. science). We are also interested in works in progress, previewing works, going backstage or behind the scenes, going center stage, eavesdropping, hearing commentaries, satire, humor, sound montages and soundscapes, short stories, and mini-dramas. show: two hours weekly; Saturdays in most markets
segments: varies
pitch: Weekend America's producers are very interested in receiving pitches and contributions from independent producers. Its producers need your insights, observations and journalistic storytelling skills to enable the program to cover all corners, philosophies, events, diverse personalities and cultures that are America. Weekend America aspires to be a different kind of public radio program. What we want from independent producers is stylistically different than what you may pitch or produce for other public radio programs. We do want the same serious, thoughtful and in depth storytelling, but we're looking for styles that fit in with our weekend companion sensibility -- a style that matches the energy of our program and our hosts. Weekend America wants to hear your story ideas and seeks to build new relationships with independent producers who may become regular contributors. All of our programs are available online at www.weekendamerica.org so you can listen to our emerging style. Or you can e-mail our Administrative Assistant, Laura Belous, at

•• Philadelphia Church
With radio broadcasts heard throughout the Middle East, Northern Africa, Asia, Europe, and spoken in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, and other languages, Global Radio Outreach is finding open hearts to the message of Jesus Christ in traditionally closed Islamic cultures. I interviewed Mike Bond, president, via email to find out more about this work. He and his wife Joyce live in Seattle, Washington, where they have four married children—Amy, Becky, Richard, Laureli—and several grandchildren. [Tavo Adame]

Global Radio Outreach
How did Global Radio Outreach (G.R.O.) get started?
The vision for G.R.O. started when Joyce and I were in Papua New Guinea as missionaries. The Lord began to stir up old thoughts of broadcasting the Gospel. Then He brought me across the path of a man named Michael Abel, a Pakistani national working with Gospel Recordings. He shared his testimony, the plight of the Great Commission to Muslims in his country and elsewhere, as well as the conditions of Christians in Muslim countries. He broke my heart that day and made it clear that that’s what the broadcasting was all about.

What are G.R.O.’s current needs, and prayer requests?
Current needs are for a Kurdish speaker, a regular Uighur host, a recording studio in Vishakhapatnam, India to record Telugu, equipment upgrades for the studio where we record Arabic storytelling programs, and about $10,000 additional per month to put the aforementioned programs on the air and get current programs up to dailies as well as add additional staff at our office to help with filing and other things. Someone who is good at fund-raising, because establishing the concept of how we function is tricky to communicate when you’re asking for support. Program coordinators are needed to help follow up on leads and to establish programs. And in-country contacts to help new converts in many ways.
