CDs/DVDs:
CDs, studio recordings, live recordings, other.
Video-VHS, Hi 8, Mini DV
Yes, we share them. But have to copy to VHS, losing resolution and definition. Am working on editing more of them, and would like advice on best format for professional sharing.
Process:
Two cameras, left and right of stage. Two operators. One fixed frame, the other floating frame. (The Sacramento Guild uses one camera SVHS. Airs at various times. Not shared. But would like to.) A library in Fredericksburg VA has distributed a number of DVD's of professional storytellers. Format is DVD R. Content is professional interview with teller, and teller telling a story to interviewer, without traditional audience. These stories come across very well. Check out Mary's website
http://www.scc.losrios.edu/~mcgratm
for both a Quick Time video of four semi-professional storytellers in her class, and a note from me about some taped sources including Fredericksburg.
Better kinds of lighting and sound reinforcement for large scale performances. Better titling and captioning. Perhaps in two languages.
• What more would you like to know about producing CDs or DVDs?
A lot.
Web Activities:
We have a very basic one for the Guild. It is courtesy of Sacramento Bee newspaper.
• Do you podcast your programs?
No, would like to.
• What more would you like to know about using the Web for storytelling?
A directory of podcasts. A listing of archives and repositories.
NSN Involvement
• Are you in/out of NSN?
In at the beginning. Lapsed.
• NSN St. Louis Conference? No.
• How important is NSN approval and recognition?
Probably good, but they need to do more themselves.
Multimedia SIG? General Info
Are you willing to share your experiences with other producers? Yes.
• How interested are you in what others are doing? Quite.
• Is there anything you'd like to add?
We are beginning to use computer projection visuals and sounds for nature study story hours. The storyteller sits or stands next to the screen, and not in the beam of light. Please take a look at the attached paper on this subject. (not attached) Have about ten hours of really good storytelling. Big audiences. Our three years of Halloween Ghost Stories. This could be sold to to other guilds or released by someone like August House.

Background
Television: Magic Carpet Ride program began in September 1988(?) and continued through June 1989 in Schenectady, New York. The show focused on folktales and Carol performed 3/4 stories before a live studio audience. Stopped because of performing schedule/difficulty in getting live audience/ turmoil at cable access station. The programs were recorded by the studio, but Carol has only a few tapes in her possession and they are not downloadable.
CDs/DVDs: Carol and her husband Don Darmer have produced 2 CDs, which they distribute through CDBaby, BWI Books, Insvideo, AVCafe, at local bookstores, one museum and at performances. This distribution method has been successful for them with relatively few problems. They might produce more CDs. She is interestsed in knowing more about producing DVDs.
CD: Travelin’ Down the Road: Sing Along Stories from Around the World
CD: Bunches of Beasts
Web Activities: Website is at http://www.talesntunes.net
NSN: Carol is in NSN, but will not be attending the St. Louis Conference in 2007.
General: Carol is willing to share her experiences and program content with other producers. Feeling a little "technophobic," she is very interested in what others are doing and wants to learn more about the uses of the newer technologies.

Background
Radio/Television Programs:
I am currently not a producer of radio or television shows, but I have knowedge and experience in both arenas.
CDs/DVDs
• Number of CDs or DVDs produced: One CD, one DVD
• Distribution method: Person-to-person.
• Has this been successful for you? Good PR, small income.
• What problems did you encounter in the process? I have opted to produce product on a small scale (which costs more) instead of having hundreds of copies in a closet waiting to be distributed.
• Will you be doing more? Yes.
• What more would you like to know about producing CDs or DVDs?
I need to be more sophisticated about how to make CDs and DVDs produce an income stream.
Web Activities
Website: http://www.StoryWorksGroup.com
• Any involvement in digital storytelling? No, but I am extremely interested in this subject.
• Any other Web activities? Only by association.
• What more would you like to know about using the Web for storytelling?
If you don't want to be left in the dust, it is important to constantly acquire new information about using the Web to keep folks interested and informed.
NSN
• Are you in/out of NSN? In.
• Will you attend the NSN St. Louis Conference (July 12-15, 2007)? Schedulewill not permit me to attend in 2007.
• How important is NSN approval and recognition? As an individual, I believe national membership is important. As a group, this should be an eventual goal.
Multimedia SIG—General Info
• Are you willing to share your experiences and/or program content with other producers? Sure
• How interested are you in what others are doing? Of course
• Is there anything you'd like from this new Multimedia SIG group? Networking is the best way to keep interest and possibilities alive.
• What benefits can this group provide for you? Networking, exploring off-beat ideas and hand-holding.
Other
• Is there anything you'd like to add?
Radio and television are really extensions of and vehicles for storytelling. Since they are both considered mass media entertainment, however, it is difficult for storytelling (as we know it) to compete with (or accept) the fast-paced and diverse production values expected by radio and television audiences. Storytellers need to evaluate what is expected, consider what is possible and decide what we are willing to do in order to best communicate our stories in unique and interesting ways.
• Do you have an archive of recordings from past events?
Well, yes. Some quite old, and most are unedited.
• What are you doing with it?
Great question! The old stuff will probably be enjoyed by my family long after I am gone. The most recent stuff may be of interest to others. (For example, I took a videographer with me to document a five-month, 9,000 mile storytelling tour in 2006. I feel like the dog that caught the car it was chasing. Now what?)
• Do you know other producers/storytellers who would be interested in joining
this SIG?
Sean Buvala (storyteller and producer), the good folks at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, and Esther Doetsch (storyteller in Scottsdale). I suspect all are already on your list.

Television Program Cable TV Show:
Storytelling with Dr.D. Light, 45 minutes, West Allis Community TV, Milwaukee and other cable markets in WI. Started 2002, Recorded a show once a month for two years. I stopped because I ran out of stories.  Too difficult to get new, polished stories every month.  They however are still broadcasting my old shows. My TV programs are recorded on video tapes. I was the featured teller and the TV station provided the technical personnel.  No compensation was given to anyone. It was all volunteer.
CDs:
I have recorded two CDs.  I sell them after shows. I did put my first CD on CD Baby but only sold one and never received the money. It will be a while until I make another CD.  Don't have the material for another one right now.
NSN Involvement:
Yes, I am a member. Hope to attend Conference in St. Louis.

CDs/DVDs:
Amy produced a CD (and is currently recording a second) of stories she writes for her syndicated newspaper column, Tell Me A Story. She has funded the entire project by herself. Costs to date have been over $20,000. She is also doing all the publicity and promotion. It is currently distributed by BWI, Amazon.com, Audible.com, CD Baby, Baker & Taylor and numerous retail stores and through her.
Her archives are downloadable through Live & Learn Audio who sell to Audible.com, MediaBay.com and others. Amy paid for all of the talent out of her own pocket. She will be glad to describe the process she went through in creating her CD. Skills required to do what she did are
Writing, Directing, Performing, Musicians, Engineering, Mixing, Mastering, CD Manufacturing, Design, Illustration, Promotion, Distribution.
Distribution:
Amy feels she had had success with the distribution methods described above, but she is still deeply in the red. Ist has, however, opened up new avenues of interest in her writing. She encountered very few problems in the creation of the CD, but when it came to distribution and promotion, it has essentially been a 40- to 50-hour week job for the last six months.
Future production:
She intends to produce a series of 10 CDs as part of this series and is currently applying for loans. Amy has learned a lot about the production process and is willing to share this information with others interested in producing CDs/DVDs.
Web activities:
Her website is at:
http://www.mythsandtales.com
Her stories appear on the Universal Press syndicate website at:
http://www.uexpress.com/tellmeastory
Amy does not podcast nor is she involved in digital storytelling.
She would like to know everything there is to know about using the Web for storytelling.
NSN:
She recently joined NSN, but will be teaching in July. She feels that NSN approval and recognition of this SIG is very important. Because she is a new NSN member, she has been involved only peripherally so far.
Multimedia SIG—General Info
Amy is willing to share her experiences and program content with other producers and she is very interested in what others are doing. She is not certain just how this SIG will benefit her or what she can contribute/learn from it.
Comments: "Only that I do feel I've been on a steep steep learning curve this last year and have learned a great deal. The idea of having a group on whom I could rely and whom I could help is most appealing. It's been a lonely game, and writing is lonely enough."

• Gere, Jeff
PO Box 37495
Honolulu, Hi 96837
jeff@jeffgere.com
http://www.jeffgere.com
http://www.talkstoryradio.com

Background
Radio:
• TALK STORY RADIO (from Aug. 2005 on), 29-minute storytelling show featuring the tales and tellers of Hawaii & the Pacific Rim (and extended family).
• Mondays 5:30pm on Hawaii Public Radio (KIPO, 89.3FM), Friday 7am on KTUH (student station at University of Hawaii), 89.1FM Sundays 10-11am Mana'o Radio (Maui)
• I'll continue the program for as long as I have good material to air (another few years), and then will begin rebroadcasting. I'm interested in who, what, where and how other storytelling shows across America. I intuit something bigger than any of these  parts can result.
Archives:
All programs are saved and sent to the stations on CDs from laptop, and are in external hard-drives. Podcasts of shows are coming very soon (thus they'll be downloadable).

The show builds largely on the 18 years of video recordings of tells at the Talk Story Festival. By loading the audio onto my laptop and tightening/cleaning them up, a substantial volume of live tells is available. I add CD recordings, have begun recording tellers at shows and at Hawaii Public Radio (very supportive). No one is paid for using their material. I do it as part of my job as the Drama Specialist for the City & County of Honolulu (Parks Dept.). They also pay a part-time techy, Kelli Heath, who is WAY over-qualified and loves the show.

I have over a hundred folders on my iTunes to sort stories. I bunch them into a show & fine-edit them (about 26 minutes), choose music,  go to Kelli and tape my ins, transitions, and outs. She then masters the program. It took about 18 months to get the format to a point where the stations were happy.  I use Audacity (free simple down-load sound editing system). I retain copies of all shows in CD: final and rough drafts and on the hard-drive.
Television:
STORY TV (going on 18 years of shows featuring performances at Talk Story Festival). This is a public access TV show, using their mobile van/studio with 3 or 4 cameras. This show airs on their station, Olelo (Hawaiian for 'to speak') for months. It extends the tellers/storytelling into the living rooms of thousands of viewers. People do watch!

I've learned the Final Cut Pro editing system there too (very sophisticated)(love the effects)(Honolulu has a wonderful station). It’s part of my job. I create :30 Public Service Announcements for the Parks Department events, including my Talk Story Festival. They air on the commercial stations FREE whenever the station chooses (by law they have to give away some time for these announcements).

CDs:
4 CDs, Two 'Haunted Hawaii' (two more ready for the fall), 'Rank Evil Mountain' (three smikin' fire foflktales), and 'Silly 'N Spooky' tales of kids in Hawaii.  And I'll do many more of them.

They're distributed by a distributer state-wide, but sales are sluggish. I sell them at shows (none to lots). I sell a few from my website, and I have two on storyteller.net (no sales yet). Spikes in sales occur when I am lucky enough to get onto Hawaiian Airlines in-flight audio program (twice), etc. but they are generally slow.

Process:
I am an 'extreme' teller, and my CDs are intense. I have been working with musician(s) in many ways, and my CDs all have musical partners. I pay them a token  fee for their collaborations, and Mana'o Radio/ Studio. I also share all recordings of tellings at Talk Story and privately with the tellers. I  am hammering out a formal agreement with Olelo and the Parks Dept. so my non-profit can 'lease' these recordings to tellers for their commercial use. The radio and TV shows are building up the concept that storytelling is great entertainment, worthy of purchasing.... an uphill challenge.

http://www.jeffgere.com is my personal website. http://www,talkstoryradio.com is the show website  (needs attention) . We will podcast very very soon. Hawaii Public Radio and my webmistress are meeting for dinner next week to coordinate, teach.

NSN:

I am a member of NSN. I WILL attend the St. Louis Conference. NSN recognition and approval is somewhat important.

Multimedia SIG - General Info
I am willing to help and share experiences with others. I suggest we collect 'How To' articles already composed from tellers and have them as a library to send out to help with CD creations. I think we should set up a podcast/download site where we can hear each other's shows and get familiar with the tone and timbre of the radio shows. There are not too many TV shows. I am very interested in what others are doing on radio and TV.... and CD productions.

I intuit a combined presence from all these smaller productions could really become something LARGER. Storytellling is mana for a malnourished fast-food mass. It deserves to be a bigger presence in the diet of the mainstream culture.  I look forward to making new friends, collaborators in The Great Work, and in learning more about what's happening nationally. yep.

Fishtrap Storytime, Stories for ages 4-104
• 1/2 hr show once a week, Weds nite, Nov-March KWVR 92.1FM
• Fishtrap is a nonprofit devoted to good writing and clear thinking in the West. ( www.fishtrap.org )
• The radio show started about 7 yrs ago.  This is my 4th year as producer.
The Bedtime Stories program began with volunteer readers of picture books, with those readings interspersed with music.  Shows were organized by theme. After I took the show over, we decided not to use copyrighted material without permission, and we changed the name of the program because kids don’t like the word “bedtime”.  A survey taught us that as many kids as adults are listening.

I have recorded a few programs live with local talent but mostly use material from recorded musicians and storytellers -- CDs or cassettes-- sent to me by the artists for “Advertising”.  I find out about artists from many sources--parents, conferences, and other storytellers.  Last fall I attended the Oregon Library Assoc. Performer's Showcase in Salem to find more.  I am picky but there are wonderful tellers out there. I provide a list of guidelines for interested tellers.

• KWVR is a country music station and I must sell Storytime to sponsors to buy the air time.  I would like to find a wider audience for my recorded shows and am contacting other small public stations that might want to run them.

I’ve had a difficult time learning to put shows together myself as no one here has the experience on a Mac, but I keep learning and am finally accomplishing this at home using an Imic, Garage Band or Final Vinyl, and Itunes.  I take a CD for the program into the station to run.
CDs/DVDs
• I have two CDs of my own stories: Why the Skunk Stinks, and Rowf! recorded by Henry's Pro Audio of Joseph, OR.  His wife did the covers and friends helped with the music.  I sell them locally, to relatives and friends, and to my seatmates when I travel.  I recently did a telling in Homer AK and have them in stores there now.  I believe it will be hard to sell them in a community that has never heard of me, but would like to sell more, of course.

• The website has not helped with the sale of CDs as far as I can see.

• I would like to know how one gets awards and recommendations from organizations of merit for storytelling CDs.
• Another good question:  how do you determine how many are listening to your radio show?

• What more would you like to know about producing CDs or DVDs? I am planning to record a CD or DVD within the next 2 years, I'd love to be involved in a group that can give me direction about the process.
• What more would you like to know about using the Web for storytelling? I'd like to find out how to design my webpage, how to record story clips and have them available on my website, etc. Not sure if podcasting is for me, I've only listened to a couple and they were really boring. I find a lot of websites boring - what's the next step out there? How do we make them more interactive?
NSN Involvement
• Are you in/out of NSN? Have been a member of NSN for about 15 years.
• Will you attend the NSN St. Louis Conference (July 12-15, 2007)? I am planning on being there.
• How important is NSN approval and recognition? Well, it's always nice to have NSN approval, but if all this results in is an unofficial group, that's fine, too.
Multimedia SIG—General Info
• Are you willing to share your experiences and/or program content with other producers? I'm always willing to share what little I know.
• How interested are you in what others are doing? I'd like to know what's out there, and who I can go to for help and inspiration. Since I don't have a teenager at home, I need to know what's going on so I don't fall behind.
• Is there anything you'd like from this new Multimedia SIG group? help, mentoring
• What benefits can this group provide for you? Oh, it would be so great to have a place to ask a tech question and get back an answer in language I can understand.
• Do you have a stash of recordings from past events? What are you doing
with them? I have a couple of CDs DVDs that were recorded of performances, none of them high enough quality to do anything with. It's very frustrating.

Background
Radio/Television Programs:
Producer: 1 CD, weekly radio show since ‘85
Katz Pajamas, Family storytelling performed by storytellers from around the world
30 minutes in Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo Co.
Since 1985, probably go on forever because they are pre-recorded now.
I'd like to find out how to produce an effective storytelling video/television program.  How to translate storytelling to these media.
• Are your programs recorded? Yes.
Studio recordings of me introducing pre-recorded storyteller recordings.
• Are your archives downloadable? They are not on the web at this time, though the are on my hard drive and could be sent to someone.
• Artists mail me their work. They are not compensated, though I mention who they are, and when people inquire about the teller/recordings, I pass on the information to them on how they can purchase the performers recordings.
• Explain your process for creating your programs. I sit and listen to CDs sent to me.  I mark the stories I like, if any, and then combine them with other tellers or musicians into something that feels like a good blend.  Sometimes it's done by theme, sometimes it's done by blending styles, it's always a little different.
• Technical skills needed? Burning a CD, working a radio board.
• Whom do you turn to for technical help? Different people at the radio station I work at.
• Is there any other storytelling programming in your area? Not in our area, there's one that's 80 miles south in L.A. which can be heard.  Uncle Ruthie on KPFK. Daniel Pinkwater's show can also be heard occasionally. I am not in touch with them, I could share a little information about their programs.
• It streams live on the web on Saturday mornings from 7:30 - 8:00 am PST.
http://www.kcbx.org/main/ListenLive.htm
• Do you podcast your programs? No.
CDs/DVDs:
Number of CDs or DVDs produced: 1 CD
Self Distribution and several distributors.  5 small bookstores, BWI, CD Baby, A/V Cafe, Z Radio, Personal sales at performances, website. The most successful - live performances, sales via reviews/awards direct people to my website.
• What problems did you encounter in the process? No real problems, just a lot of work.
• Will you do more? I hope to do more, just trying to decide what I want to do next.
• Information you would like: I'd like to know about DVDs, mostly how can I transfer what I do on a non-interactive format like Video and make it work.
NSN Involvement
• Are you in/out of NSN? I'm in I believe.
• Will you attend the NSN St. Louis Conference (July 12-15, 2007)? I'm not planning on it.
• How important is NSN approval and recognition? It's important.
Multimedia SIG - General Info
• Are you willing to share your experiences and program content with other producers? Yes.
• How interested are you in what others are doing? Fairly.
• Is there anything you'd like from this new Multimedia SIG group? Information on DVD production.
• What benefits can this group provide for you? Some help with DVD production, networking

Background
Radio/Television Programs:
I've had each in the past, but none currently.
• Focus of your Radio/TV show: Storytelling.
• Format/length of each show: 1/2 hr. each, if I recall correctly.
• Where does/did it air? Radio was in Monroe County, MI & later Tecumseh, MI / Cable TVwas in Mount Clemens, MI.
• When did you start your programs? Radio shows were in early '70s / Cable TV was in '80s.
• Why did you stop making your programs? Moving to Mt. Clemens meant radio wasn't worth local production.  The Cable TVstation went through staff changes & copyright meant a lot of work gathering either public domain material or making own versions of stories from multiple versions. This meant a lot of work when the purpose was to promote programs at the library.
• Are your programs recorded? They were, but doubt I have any.
• By what method? CDs, studio recordings, live recordings, other. Studio recordings
• Do you share them with others? Doubt I could find them.
• Are your featured talent/tellers/performers compensated? I was the sole performer & it was part of my job for the library.
• Explain your process for creating your programs.  Either told public domain stories that would be used at the library or created a version from multiple sources.
CDs/DVDs:
• Number of CDs or DVDs produced: 0 -- actually that's not true, there have been videos of tellings I have done at times, but they were not created for sale.
• Will you be doing more? Am uncertain if this is a good idea or not. It seems to be a step towards credibility, but I prefer to have my performances be live. Still I can see that I'm going to need audios & videos to send to be considered for some festivals & conferences & other gigs.
• What more would you like to know about producing CDs or DVDs? Ways to produce good quality on a "shoestring."
Web Activities:
• There's a brief kaleidoscope of my telling several stories on the state arts & humanities website http://www.michiganhumanities.org/touring/2006_2009/storyteller/loissprengnether.htm
• What more would you like to know about using the Web for storytelling? How to produce my own videos that have good quality without looking homemade.
NSN Involvement:
• Are you in/out of NSN? IN
• Will you attend the NSN St. Louis Conference (July 12-15, 2007)? I already have a gig opposite it, so I can't.
• How important is NSN approval, recognition and affiliation with NSN to  the growth and longevity of this SIG? Probably isn't & might even be better without it.
Could this SIG survive as a separate nonprofit? Probably.
Multimedia SIG—General Info:
• Are you willing to share your experiences and/or program content with other producers? Sure, what little there is.
• How interested are you in what others are doing? A lot, but I'm uncertain how active I will be.
• What benefits can this group provide for you? Resources & knowledge
Do you have a stash of recordings from past events? What are you doing  with them? Not much. Stored.

Background
Radio:
KRFC Fort Collins, 88.9 FM Community Radio
STORY TIME RADIO, Intergenerational storytelling with mission to bring storytellers from region to share their tales. I also do phone interviews with storytellers from around the United States.
Weekly, one-half hour show (Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m. @ FORT COLLINS, CO, begun in June, 2004. I intend to continue indefinitely. I am interested in marketing the program in the community and bringing in more storytellers to share their art.
Archives:
I have a complete collection of the programs I have hosted. After each show, I make a CD of the show. I use these CDs when I teach a class (AIMS Community College) for teachers. The station is in charge of providing downloadable archives.
• What are you doing with them?
Not enough. As I mentioned, I use the shows for teaching and workshops.
Compensation:
Any guest on the show receives a CD of the show for their own use.
Process for creating your program:
I submitted a proposal for my storytelling telling show, along with an audition tape of telling some stories. Originally, I had a techy/co-host who worked the boards while I told stories and we shared conversation together. rocess for creating your programs. After five months, they had training for all programmers so they could tech their own show. I have been trained, but I also have a technician who works my show with me weekly.
CDs/DVDs:
I have produced a promotional CD for distribution when doing workshops on "Passing on Your Legacy Through Storytelling." I have also produced a DVD of a performance I did for a Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration event to market my storytelling skills. I need advice on distribution. It was professionally done and the company did a very good job. I will not do more without professional advice. I want to know more about taking my storytelling shows and using them to make a CD, legal advice, etc.
Web Activities:
No podcasts, People are able to stream the WEB for the programs on KRFC, but I do not believe they have archived some of the shows at this time. I have not done digital storytelling but am interested in finding out more. I want to talk with people about making my website more interactive with my radio show.
NSN Involvement:
I am a member of NSN. I would go to St. Louis if it gave me an opportunity to meet with other multimedia storytellers.
• How important is NSN approval and recognition?
This varies for me.
Multimedia SIG—General Info
• Are you willing to share your experiences and/or program content with other producers?
Most definitely! I have belonged to the Producers SIG and tried to establish the need of gathering together those storytellers who are producing radio programs in storytelling. I would like to see a directory of radio and TV storytelling hosts on stations around the nation. Not just commercial stations, but a list of community/public stations.
• How interested are you in what others are doing?
Very much! and I would like to see a gathering of hosts and program producers in the multimedia field.
• Is there anything more you'd like?
More conversation and a possible "retreat" within regions of Multimedia SIG members. A state listing of storytellers who have radio/TV programs.
• What benefits do you want from this SIG?
Sharing of ideas and also bringing them onto my radio show and sharing my storytelling skills with them.
• Is there anything you'd like to add?
I am willing to put time into a multimedia SIG. I also need to say that there are many storytellers in my community who are not involved in NSN for one reason or another. My mission with "Storytime Radio" is to find people in the community/region to share their personal stories and discover the storyteller inside themselves. I produced "Tellabration! 2006" on KRFC last year. Also, last year and this year I have hosted an hour show to bring the winners of an essay and poetry contest for the martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. This show brings the winners of this local elementary and middle school contest to the radio station for them to read their winning essays and poems. I give each student a CD of the program so they can "Hear their stories." This show will be live on Sunday, January 14th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and is a combining of "The Poetry Show" and "Storytime Radio." This is one way we can work with youth in the community.
Others to contact?
I have passed this information on to two other storytellers who host and produce radio programs. Bailey Phelps and Eric Patterson, both of Colorado.

Background
Radio Programs
• Experience: 10+ years daily radio show, NPR; many CD Radio, in the late 1970s.
The Spider's Web
Children's literature and storytelling, 30 minutes, 5 nights per week.
Aired on NPR stations across the country.
Program started in the late '60s and ended in 1980 or 1981 when funding dried up!
A few of my productions of Jay O'Callahan's stories for The Spider's Web are available as cassette and CDs. Jay bought the masters from WGBH Radio and distributes them as a part of his personal business. After The Spider's Web ended, I produced storytelling cassettes/CDs by many other storytellers and a few more by Jay O'Callahan, plus one of my own stories for children.

• What more would you like to know about producing radio/television programs?
I was a member of the production team back when radio and audio production was still done on audio tape, so I want to get into digital production.  I own an M-Box and Macintosh computer, still need a portable digital recording device and good microphone for hand-held audio work. I'm also interested in small-scale simple video production, such as single camera work aimed for web or YouTube distribution. I've also got a dream of recording stories from my region (The Finger Lakes of Central New York State), and to assemble a web site to house the collection as transcriptions and selected recordings with a good search index.  These recordings would first focus on elders in the region and their memories of growing up in the area.
Web Activities
http://home.twcny.rr.com/lmarvin/
This is just a simple little site for my anemic storytelling career. But I used the web as the major organizing device of "StoryTsunami," a fundraising effort in response to the Tsunami disaster of 2004.
NSN
I'm a current member (well, okay, my membership is lapsed at the moment). I won't be at the St. Louis Conference.
• How important is NSN approval and recognition?  Not very -- we can always do our own thing, with or without NSN, if there are enough people interested.
Multimedia SIG-General Info
Are you willing to share your experiences and/or program content with other producers?
Sure!
How interested are you in what others are doing?
Very!  Especially interested in podcasting, digital audio production, web posting, and low-tech video production.

Radio/Television Programs:
None at this time but I am interested in doing something.
Degree in TV production back in the old days of black and white TV.
CDs/DVDs:
Steve's stories are recorded on CDs, studio recordings, live recordings, other. They are downloadable. He shares them with others. He does a lot of "seat of the pants" creation but now has a large repertoire of over 450 stories. The most difficult part of the recording process was discovering how hard it is to do a studio recording. He urges all tellers, live and recorded, to develop a love of direct marketing.
Steve has produced three CDs and distributes them at live performances and on
http://www.storyteller.net
He would like to sell more CDs than he does, but profits from sales are a great supplement to his income. He would like to do more CDs in the future. He is beginning to cut back the number of live performances he gives; he did over 250 shows each year for the last 10 years.
Web Activities:
Steve's domain name just does stealth forwarding to his site at NSN. Steve does not podcast, is not involved in digital storytelling or other Web activities, but he is interested in learning more about using the Web for storytelling.
NSN:
Member for past 18 years. Will attend the St. Louis Conference in 2007. He will be performing a Fringe piece and is the Coordinator of Swaps. He believes that NSN affiliation is very important for this SIG.
Multimedia SIG—General Info
Steve is willing to share his experiences and expertise with other producers and is very interested in what others are doing. He feels that the most important function for this SIG is to furnish "How-Tos" to people. He wonders if we need a full SIG group or just a common interest group.
Steve does not an an archive of recordings.
Comments: He believes that there may be others like him who are just on the "fringe" of the potential of expanding electronic distribution.

Background
A bit about me:
I am a graphic designer and web designer. I have designed numerous projects for NSN, including the conference program books and the booklets for the National Storytelling Press. I have designed websites for many storytellers, and small businesses.

I produced the Illinois Storytelling Festival for eight years, the Riverbend Storytelling Festival in West Bend Wisconsin for three years, and the Regional concerts for the 2003 National Conference in Chicago.

I have been the Business Manager for Northlands Storytelling Network for the last six years. Northlands produces an annual conference in Wisconsin every April. It is through this work that I see a need to learn about CD recording and video recording and editing.

I work on a Mac, so I have been teaching myself iMovie along with Sound Studio which allows me to convert audiotapes into my computer.

I am very interested in digital storytelling - I think many of the storytellers here in the midwest could benefit. I would love to be the computer geek that gets them fired up about it.

I have a bunch of old videos (20+ years old) that I would love to convert to DVD. I have a bunch of audiotapes that I know how to convert into my computer, but don't know how to make the sound better. (Mostly because I don't know the tech terms used by the software.)

I am a member of NSN, and will probably attend the conference in St. Louis. Probably will not attend any workshops because there isn't anything for me. I enjoy the concerts, swaps and fringe. And hanging out with everybody.
