When you make the broom, save a straw or two to "beat the
straws." This was done on fiddles, guitars or banjos while
the "real" musician was playing! Some old timers who
saw me "rattling the bones" taught me how to do that.
Unfortunately, my banjo picker is not too crazy about me leaning
over his shoulder with a couple of straws and beating on the strings
while he plays.
3) A broom walks into a bar, takes a seat next to a thin blonde.
The blonde says, "Hi, my name is Debby. Are you here to sweep
me off my feet?" The broom says, "Actually, no. I used
to be a scarecrow but someone stole my clothes, and I'm just trying
to keep it together."
4) The Little Old Woman Who Hated Housework. It's in one of Margaret Read MacDonald's book.

5) Seven Brooms. (Texts & Translations).: An article from: Marvels & Tales by Jack Zipes
This is a retelling of a
Neapolitan tale, Cunto d' 'e duie mercante (The Tale of Two Merchants), which was originally recorded
from oral tradition and published in the late nineteenth century.
Based on a tale that involves family rivalries, class differences,
and a valaorous daughter, this literary retelling in colloquial
English incorporates significant changes that create more color,
clarity, and consistency, and that stress the feminist feature
of the story.
6) Broom Trivia
No hag will pass a broom placed by the door. Hags will avoid brooms
night or day, in human form or in their demonic shape. Hags share
a compulsive nature and must count every hole in a sieve hung
on a doorway or each bristle of a brush. One reason for their
dislike of brooms is that they must count each and every straw
in any broom that they encounter. It may take the whole night
to count some objects left by a doorway -- and by daylight (the
second "fowl crow") the hag must go back to the body
or the skin she has left behind. But beware! Some hags havelearned
to count quickly over the years and so can manage to get past
the obstacles set in their way.
7) Gullah Dialect and Sea Island Culture (Beaufort County, SC):
Part II: Sea Island Culture
Historical legends The other major set of legends from the Miple
Ages relates to the Black Death, the epidemic which struck Norway
in 1349 - 50. This plague is often personified in the guise of
an old woman who traveled the country with a rake and a broom.
Where she used her rake some survived, but where she used her
broom all were swept away. The legends also tell us a lot about
the impact of the epidemic.
8) In this story a broom is one of the things they use to fetch
the moon out of the pond. Then the gentleman went on his travels
again; and he came to a village, and outside the village there
was a pond, and round the pond was a crowd of people. And they
had got rakes, and brooms, and pitchforks reaching into the pond;
and the gentleman asked what was the matter.
