Broom Mates by Margie Palatini. (2003 - Ages 4-8)

Awakened by her doorbell the night before the gala, she discovers that her sister, Mag the Hag, who "just flew in from Maliboo" for the fun, has arrived 24 hours early. They've never gotten along "since they were little ghouls" and this time is no different.

Buy a broom besom: The story of a broom by William Henry Young. (1976)

Curling, Etcetera: A Whole Bunch of Stuff About the Roaring Game by Bob Weeks. (2008)
With odd, funny factoids on every page, the book sheds light on the long-forgotten Downer Disc, a round curling broom, and how Charlie Kerr, a Brier curler of the '40s, was thwarted by the ash from his own cigar.

Just For You! Jumping The Broom by Sonia Black with Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa-Hu (illustrators). (2004 - Ages 4-8)
It's a joyful occasion in the slave quarters as two young people ready themselves to ``jump the broom''; the men make baskets and furniture for them, the women sew a brilliantly colorful quilt, and (for a while, at least) slavery's hard reality is ignored. Eight-year-old Lettie observes these preparations, the simple ceremony, and the subsequent celebration; through her, the author acknowledges the reality without allowing it to dim the festivities.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson with Axel Scheffler (illus). (2003 - Ages 4-8)
There's always room for one more on this affable witch's broomstick... or is there? In another mild-mannered tale from the creators of the Smarties Prize-winning picture book, The Gruffalo, a witch and her happily purring cat fly through the wind on their broomstick, without a care in the world, until the witch's black hat blows away. In the process of retrieving it, they pick up another passenger, a polite and helpful dog. All goes well until the witch's hair bow flies off. And then her wand. And then real disaster strikes...

Room on the Broom Activity Book by Julia Donaldson with Axel Scheffler (illus). (2008 - Ages 4-8)
This is a great value activity book packed with fantastic games and activities featuring characters and scenes from the bestselling "Room on the Broom". It includes puzzles, colouring-in, join the dots and more. There's even a sticker scene with over 40 reusable stickers, so you can have fun creating your own stories again and again!

Room on the Broom and Other Songs, The (Book & CD) by Julia Donaldson with Axel Scheffler (illus). (2006 - Ages 4-8)
As well as being the UK's most successful picture book author, Julia Donaldson is a gifted songwriter for children. This volume includes nine of her best-loved songs and each score includes piano accompaniment and guitar chords. The songs will be familiar to anyone who has heard them on TV or radio or enjoyed one of Julia's hugely popular live performances. A CD, attached to the inside cover of the book, contains all nine songs, sung by the author. Now, everyone can sing along!

Widow's Broom, The by Chris Van Alsburg. (1992 - Ages 4-8)
When Minna Shaw comes into possession of a witch's broom, it is as if good fortune itself has dropped from the sky. The widow's ignorant neighbors hate and torment the implement, though, fearing what they cannot understand; but in the end the widow and her broom triumph.

Softcover. New York, Orange Judd Co. , illus (1879) Comp. by the editors of the American Agriculturist. Print On Demand: 2001 black and white facsimile of original book. Charts and graphics may be obscured or resized to fit pages. No cover art (generic softcover binding). pp. 68.

When you make the broom, save a straw or two to "beat the straws." This was done on fiddles, guitars or banjos while the "real" musician was playing! Some old timers who saw me "rattling the bones" taught me how to do that. Unfortunately, my banjo picker is not too crazy about me leaning over his shoulder with a couple of straws and beating on the strings while he plays.

3) A broom walks into a bar, takes a seat next to a thin blonde. The blonde says, "Hi, my name is Debby. Are you here to sweep me off my feet?" The broom says, "Actually, no. I used to be a scarecrow but someone stole my clothes, and I'm just trying to keep it together."

4) The Little Old Woman Who Hated Housework. It's in one of Margaret Read MacDonald's book.
Bones: http://www.story-lovers.com/listswomanhatedhousework.html

5) Seven Brooms. (Texts & Translations).: An article from: Marvels & Tales by Jack Zipes
This is a retelling of a Neapolitan tale, Cunto d' 'e duie mercante (The Tale of Two Merchants), which was originally recorded from oral tradition and published in the late nineteenth century. Based on a tale that involves family rivalries, class differences, and a valaorous daughter, this literary retelling in colloquial English incorporates significant changes that create more color, clarity, and consistency, and that stress the feminist feature of the story.

6) Broom Trivia
No hag will pass a broom placed by the door. Hags will avoid brooms night or day, in human form or in their demonic shape. Hags share a compulsive nature and must count every hole in a sieve hung on a doorway or each bristle of a brush. One reason for their dislike of brooms is that they must count each and every straw in any broom that they encounter. It may take the whole night to count some objects left by a doorway -- and by daylight (the second "fowl crow") the hag must go back to the body or the skin she has left behind. But beware! Some hags havelearned to count quickly over the years and so can manage to get past the obstacles set in their way.

7) Gullah Dialect and Sea Island Culture (Beaufort County, SC): Part II: Sea Island Culture
Historical legends The other major set of legends from the Miple Ages relates to the Black Death, the epidemic which struck Norway in 1349 - 50. This plague is often personified in the guise of an old woman who traveled the country with a rake and a broom. Where she used her rake some survived, but where she used her broom all were swept away. The legends also tell us a lot about the impact of the epidemic.

8) In this story a broom is one of the things they use to fetch the moon out of the pond. Then the gentleman went on his travels again; and he came to a village, and outside the village there was a pond, and round the pond was a crowd of people. And they had got rakes, and brooms, and pitchforks reaching into the pond; and the gentleman asked what was the matter.
