2) I'm wondering if some of Kendall Haven's collections would be of help to you? He has one book on the Civil War, another on the Revolution and still another on women. Each book contains 25 to 30 stories and the grade span is right on target.

Another possibility you might be able to find at a used book sale are those sets that used to come with encyclopedias. We still have The Young Folks' Shelf of Books that came with a Collier's encyclopedia that's now 45 years old. Volume 8 is Stories from History and includes stories about Molly Pitcher, The Boston Tea Party, Davy Crockett Legends, Abe Lincoln's books (by Carl Sandburg), Louise Alcott, War Nurse, and an Ernie Pyle story from World War II.
