1) Query:
I got to be a minor expert on electronic publishing a few years ago when I had some books published that way. I received a 4-figure royalty cheque for one of the books. Unfortunately, there was a decimal point smack in the middle of the 4 figures. Now I'm contemplating electronically publishing two of them myself: the great 21st-century American novel Earn Fire, and my invaluable cautionary collection called English Like It Is: Right, Wrong and Changing Usage. They will be delivered via email attachment for a ridiculously low price.
Questions:
• What is the best current method of formatting the books? PDF (if so, how do I get the tool from Adobe?) or Word document or other?
• What is the most convenient and safe method of raking in the thousands of dollars, pounds and euros that will hopefully (don't argue: "hopefully" has been redeemed) result from this enterprise? I don't take credit cards.
BTW: I found this amusing error in last week's Sunday Telegraph's fashion victim mag -- "the gold-and-lizard flats for those with an adversity to heels" (STel 19/3/06 Stella p. 4)

Response:
I downloaded and use, for free, the CutePDF program available at:
http://www.cutepdf.com/
2) There is a "pro" version available for $49.95 from the same site, although I am not sure what the difference is, LOL.
I've never had a compatibility problem using CutePDF.
We talk about this in our upcoming technology telecourse, it's one of our "nearly free" TeleCourses and I encourage anyone to take it.

Response:On our Macs with OS X 10.4, that is an option in the print window for any application, not just Word. Our printer is a Canon, but I've heard that other printers now do this on Macs. It may be part of how they use the Preview application.
