1) How about Knights of the Fish - it's from one of the Coloured Fairy Books. The twins' armour grows on a tree, and once they put it on, it grows with them. (Bonus: there's a dragon!)
RESPONSES:
a) It's in the Brown book...oh those crazy colors. The Knights of the Fish from Andrew Lang's Fairy Books.

2) These stories don't have to do with armor but with invisibility. The male character in this story uses his powers to cloak himself so the women of the village cannot see him. He is then able to tell if they are lying which helps him discover the woman he should marry.

The other tale that came to mind is The Emperor's New Clothes, Hans Christian Andersen.

I always loved the ending, it is the child who has the courage to speak the truth. There are other ways to protect ourselves besides wearing armor, honesty is indeed a virtue which protects us. Perhaps he can make these stories fit his theme.
3) This may not help, but the story that came to mind immediately is of a salesman who goes on and on about the wonderful armour he is selling - no arrow can pierce it, protects you through battle, etc. When he has little interest from the crowd, he then takes out an arrow and starts selling it, raving about how swift and sure it will fly and how it can pierce any armour. His whole pitch comes to a screeching, speechless halt when a listener asks, "What happens if your arrow hits your armour?" As I recall the story comes to a screeching halt there too!
4) A bell is ringing faintly in my head. I recall that many years ago I created a story based on the 'whole armour of God (the passage in Ephesians, I think ... too lazy to look it up) with the breastplate of righteousness etc. I cut out a large cardboard man and created all the pieces of his armour - rather like those paper dress-up dolls . Then began the story with a joke something along the lines - An (Italian) immigrant was walking down a street and saw a man dressed in a Salvation Army uniform. He stopped and asked where the man had got such a splendid uniform. The man replied, "I belong to the Lord Jesus." The immigrant became very excited. "I think my brother works for his brother - the Kraft Jesus (Cheeses)." I then went on to say, in the Bible, I had found a wonderful uniform that we could all wear. (And I brought out my cardboard cutout and proceeded with story and prop to outfit him for life.) Sorry, that's all I remember ... except that it worked very well.
