When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the newly born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

When Herod, the king, heard these things, he was greatly troubled. He gathered all the high priests and scribes together and asked them where the Christ had been born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea."

Then Herod privately called the wise men to him and sent them to Bethlehem with the command, "Go and search carefully for the young child, and when you have found him, come and let me know, that I also may go and worship him." When they had heard the king, the wise men went away, and the star went before them until it stood over the place where the young child was. They were overjoyed at the sight; and when they came into the stable and saw the child with Mary, his mother, they knelt down and worshipped him and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. But being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another way.
