JONAH CAST INTO THE SEA - JONAH AND THE WHALE
from the Old Testament
Bible-15
|
(Story on the back
of the card)
God
spoke to the prophet Jonah saying, "Arise and go to wicked
Nineveh and tell the people there of the punishment that is coming
upon them for their sins." But Jonah did not want to go.
He fled to the seaside city of Joppa where he boarded a ship going
far away, hoping that he would never again hear the Lord speaking
to him.
But when
he had sailed out on the sea, the Lord sent a strong wind and there
was a great storm, and the ship was in danger of being broken to
pieces. The sailors prayed to their gods for help and lightened
the ship to keep it from sinking. But Jonah did not know of the
danger, for he was asleep in the lower part of the ship. The captain
awakened him saying, "Rise up and pray to thy God to pity us
and save us from drowning!"
The sailors
cast lots to find out what wicked person among them was responsible
for the storm, and the lot fell to Jonah. He confessed that he was
fleeing from the Lord and said that if they cast him into the sea,
the storm would pass. They did not want to throw Jonah into the
raging waters, but the storm would not stop until they finally threw
him overboard. At once the sea grew still and calm. The men wondered
at this and offered a sacrifice to this all-powerful Lord, promising
to serve him for the rest of their lives.
The Lord
sent a great whale to the side of the ship to swallow up Jonah as
soon as he was cast into the sea. Jonah repented his sins for three
days and three nights from inside the whale. God heard him and finally
commanded the whale to cast him out on the land.
